NASA LAUNCHES INTERACTIVE SIMULATION OF SATELLITE COMMUNICATIONS

MOFFETT FIELD, Calif. -- NASA today unveiled an interactive computer
simulation that allows virtual explorers of all ages to dock the
space shuttle at the International Space Station, experience a
virtual trip to Mars or a lunar impact, and explore images of star
formations taken by the Hubble Space Telescope.

In an effort to excite young people about space and NASA's missions,
the agency has launched the online Space Communication and Navigation
(SCaN) simulation, designed to entertain and educate. The interactive
simulation offers a virtual 3-D experience to visualize how data
travels along various space communications paths.

"The elaborate space communications networks that connect scientists
and engineers with NASA's spacecraft is essential to all of NASA's
missions and can be a challenging concept to comprehend," said
Barbara Adde, a policy and strategic communications manager for the
Office of Space Communications and Navigation at NASA Headquarters in
Washington. "This simulation helps explain this complex
infrastructure in an engaging way by using an interactive 3-D game."

The interactive Space Communication and Navigation simulation allows
visitors to select spacecraft and experience a "flythrough," or a
tutorial with images and descriptions of NASA's three space
communication networks. For example, the Near Earth Network
flythrough shows how data originates at an antenna at McMurdo
Station, McMurdo Sound, Antarctica. The data is then sent to NASA's
Ice, Cloud, and land Elevation Satellite, or ICESat, as it passes
overhead.

The Space Network flythrough also shows how data is relayed from
NASA's White Sands Test Facility, N.M., to the space station via the
Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System, a network of communication
satellites and ground stations NASA uses for space communications.

Finally, in the Deep Space Network demonstration, visitors learn how
NASA communicates with the Mars Exploration Rovers, Sprit and
Opportunity, by using the Madrid Deep Space Network antenna to send
data to the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, which then relays the data
to the rover.

"Making this interactive simulation available to young people is
important and may lead them to consider a career in engineering,
science or information technology as it relates to space," said Chris
C. Kemp, chief information officer at NASA's Ames Research Center at
Moffett Field, Calif. "NASA is embracing the fact that programs like
this help convey NASA's message to people who respond well to virtual
and online learning environments."

The space communication network simulation features nine spacecraft to
choose from, including the Hubble Space Telescope, the space station,
the space shuttle orbiter, the Spirit and Opportunity rovers,
Cassini, the Lunar CRater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS),
ICESat and Aura. Once a spacecraft is contacted, visitors can request
actions such as "choose an imaging target" and "take pictures" of the
Crab Nebula as seen from Hubble, or view videos of the space shuttle
docking at the station.

In addition to the Space Communication and Navigation simulation, NASA
provides interactive applications and other online educational tools
on its Web site.

NASA BRIEFING HIGHLIGHTS EDUCATION OUTREACH DURING NEXT SHUTTLE FLIGHT

Next mission includes teacher turned astronaut Dottie Metcalf-Lindenburger

HOUSTON -- NASA will highlight the educational activities planned on the next space shuttle mission during a news briefing at 12 p.m. CDT, Tuesday, March 9. The briefing will originate from NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston and be carried live on NASA Television and the agency's Web site. Reporters will be able to ask questions from participating NASA locations.

Astronaut and former school teacher Ricky Arnold will be joined by Cindy McArthur from the Teaching from Space Office to discuss educational activities involving astronaut and former teacher Dottie Metcalf-Lindenburger during the STS-131 shuttle flight.
Metcalf-Lindenburger will be the last of the three school teachers selected as mission specialists in the 2004 Educator Astronaut Class to fly on the space shuttle. Arnold and Joseph Acaba flew on the STS-119 shuttle mission in March 2009.

The educational activities on the STS-131 shuttle mission to the International Space Station will focus on robotics and careers in science, technology, engineering and math. The briefing also will explain how educators can become involved in learning activities during and after the shuttle mission.

Without robotics, major accomplishments of building the station, repairing satellites in space and exploring other worlds would not be possible. Metcalf-Lindenburger will operate the space shuttle's robotic arm and a 50-foot Orbiter Boom Sensing System to inspect the shuttle for any damage that might have occurred during launch or in space. A digital camera and laser system on the boom's end provide three-dimensional imagery used by analysts to assess the health of the shuttle's heat shield.

The education briefing is part of a series of news conferences to preview the STS-131 mission. Metcalf-Lindenburger and her crewmates will be available at 1 p.m. during a crew news conference from Johnson that will air on NASA TV. For Metcalf-Lindenburger's complete biography, visit:

NASA HOSTS FIRST-EVER WATER SUSTAINABILITY FORUM MARCH 16 -18

WASHINGTON -- NASA today announced its founding partnership of Launch,
an initiative to identify, showcase and support innovative approaches
to sustainability challenges through a series of forums. The first
forum, "Launch: Water," will take place at NASA's Kennedy Space
Center in Florida from March 16-18.

"NASA is perfectly positioned to host a conversation with experts
about potential solutions to the world's most perplexing
sustainability problems," said NASA's Deputy Administrator Lori
Garver, the host of the forum. "NASA offers a culture of
problem-solving, deep technical expertise on sustainable systems such
as the International Space Station, and a unique capacity to capture
and analyze data about our home planet."

Other founding partners are the U.S. Agency for International
Development, the U.S. State Department and Nike. The event will bring
together 10 entrepreneurs from around the world who have proposed
solutions to water shortages and 40 council members who represent
business, policy, engineering, science, communications and
sustainability sectors. During the two-and-a-half day forum, the
invited innovators and the Launch Council will participate in
sessions designed to identify challenges and discuss future
opportunities for their innovations.

Media are invited to attend this first Launch forum. U.S. journalists
must contact Katherine Trinidad at 202-358-1100 by March 15 to
arrange credentials. Credentialed journalists may request interviews
with the participants. For those unable to attend the event, it will
be broadcast live at:

Launch is a global initiative to identify and support innovative work
that will contribute to a sustainable future. Organizers have begun a
global search for visionaries, whose innovative world-class ideas,
technologies or programs show great promise in making tangible
impacts on society. Through a series of forums focused on key
challenge areas including water, air, food, energy, mobility and
sustainable cities, Launch will give thought leaders a forum to
present innovative ideas among peers and join in collaborative,
solution-driven discussions.

Jonathan's Space Report
No. 624 2010 Mar 6 Somerville, MA

Shuttle and Station

STS-131 was rolled out to the launch pad on Mar 4; it is scheduled
for launch in April. The STS-130 mission was completed on Feb 22.

STS-130's second spacewalk began on Feb 14, with Quest airlock depressurization
at 0219 UTC and hatch open at 0220 UTC. Patrick, in SEMU 3004, and Behnken, in
SEMU 3018, hooked up fluid lines and electrical cables between Unity and
Tranquility. The spacewalk ended with repressurization of Quest at 0814 UTC.

The Cupola was unberthed from the end of the Tranquility module at 0524 UTC
Feb 15, after an hour's delay due to uncooperative bolts and latches.

The Space Station's module shuffle continues as reserve docking port
PMA-3 was unbolted from the zenith location on the Harmony module at
0052 UTC on Feb 16 and moved by the SSRMS arm to the end location on
Tranquility, where the Cupola used to be. PMA-3 was fixed in its new
location at 0228 UTC.

For EVA3 Behnken used SEMU 3005 and Patrick used SEMU 3004.
Quest was depressurized at 0213 UTC, with hatch open a minute later.
They completed the exterior outfitting of Tranquility and Cupola.
The airlock was repressurized at 0803 UTC, with Cupola's newly open window
shutters exposing the windows and giving the crew a new view of the Earth.

Endeavour undocked at 0054 UTC on Feb 20. The OMS engines were fired at
0214 UTC on Feb 22 to drop the vehicle out of orbit, and it landed on
runway 15 at Kennedy Space Center at 0320 UTC.

Landing of Soyuz TMA-16, with Maksim Suraev and Jeff Williams, is
scheduled for March 18.

Yaogan 9

China launched the 'yaogan weixing jiu hao' (Resource Satellite No. 9)
from the Jiuquan space center on Mar 5. The satellite is thought to have
both civilian and military applications; the large fairing on the CZ-4C
launch vehicle suggests the possibility of a big SAR radar antenna. US
tracking reports the satellite in a 1083 x 1100 km x 63.4 deg orbit,
very like that used by the US Navy ocean surveillance satellites.
The orbital inclination is lower than previous Yaogan missions but
similar to that used by the old low-orbit FSW satellites launched
from Jiuquan.

This is the 19th launch of the Shanghai-developed Chang Zheng 4
(CZ-4, Long March 4) launch vehicle, and the first from the northern
Jiuquan base. All previous CZ-4, CZ-4B and CZ-4C launches were from
the Taiyuan center.

Current orbits of Yaogan Weixing satellites: (km x km x deg)
  YW1 627 x 629 x 97.9
YW2 631 x 655 x 97.6
YW3 627 x 629 x 97.8
YW4 634 x 652 x 97.9
YW5 486 x 493 x 97.4
YW6 510 x 511 x 97.6
YW7 622 x 660 x 97.9
YW8 1192 x 1204 x 100.5
YW9 1083 x 1100 x 63.4

GLONASS

A Khrunichev Proton-M rocket with an Energiya Blok DM-2 upper stage was
launched from Baykonur on Mar 1. Early on Mar 2 it deployed three
Uragan-M navigation satellites, Nos. 731, 732 and 735; they were given

A new weather satellite was launched from Cape Canaveral on Mar 4 aboard
a Boeing Delta 4. The latest Geostationary Operational Environmental
Satellite, GOES P, has a launch mass of 3215 kg and a dry mass of around
1540 kg and is based on the Boeing 601 bus. It reached a 6623 x 35177 km
x 12.1 deg orbit at 0418 UTC on Mar 5. GOES P carries a weather imager
and sounder, as well as a space environment monitor, a search
and rescue transponder, and a solar X-ray telescope.

Mars Express

Europe's Mars Express orbiter has been making close flybys of the small
Martian moon Phobos, with a record close approach of 67 km on March 3,
beating the previous 89 km record set by Viking Orbiter 1 on 1977 Feb 20.
Mars Express is in a 353 x 10333 km x 86.8 deg orbit around Mars, while
Phobos is in a 5838 x 6122 km x 1.1 deg orbit.

Cassini

The Cassini probe made the closest ever flyby of Saturn's moon Mimas
(Saturn I) at 1723 UTC on Feb 13, passing 9520 km from the icy world's
surface. At 1742 UTC on Mar 2, Cassini flew only 101 km from Rhea
(Saturn V), and the next day on Mar 3 at 1342 UTC passed 1817 km from
the Dione Trojan moon, Helene (Saturn XII).

The Stardust space probe changed its orbit slightly on Feb 17,
decreasing its perihelion by 75000 km to target a flyby of comet
9P/Tempel-1 at 0442 UTC on 2011 Feb 15. Stardust is now
in a 0.971 x 1.728 AU x 8.5 deg solar orbit and is currently
in the paramartian region in the (heliocentric) direction of Pisces.

Suborbital flights

Dartmouth'se CHARM II payload was launched on a Black Brant XII,
NASA 40.025UE, on Feb 16 to study auroral particle acceleration.

The Swedish-German REXUS program launched two small Orion rockets
from the ESRANGE base in Kiruna, Sweden, carrying student experiments
to the edge of space.

The Russian Navy launched an R-29RM Sineva missile from a submarine
in the Barents Sea, probably to the Kura target range in Kamchatka.
The Sineva usually carries around 4 reentry vehicles.

The two MARTI targets used as victims of the Airborne Laser
were flights NASA 36.250DR on Feb 4 and NASA 36.251DR on Feb 12,
following on from the Jan 10 test launch of NASA 36.247DR.

India launched a new sounding rocket on Mar 3. The Advanced Technology
Vehicle is a two-stage rocket which, based on photos, appears to
have two identical stages based on the old RH-560 sounding rocket motor,
itself derived from the old French Stromboli motor. This makes
ATV very similar to the 1960s Eridan rocket in external appearance.
The rocket reached a 46 km apogee; since it didn't leave the atmosphere
on this flight it is not included in the table below.

Next mission includes teacher turned astronaut Dottie
Metcalf-Lindenburger

HOUSTON -- NASA will highlight the educational activities planned on
the next space shuttle mission during a news briefing at 12 p.m. CDT,
Tuesday, March 9. The briefing will originate from NASA's Johnson
Space Center in Houston and be carried live on NASA Television and
the agency's Web site. Reporters will be able to ask questions from
participating NASA locations.

Astronaut and former school teacher Ricky Arnold will be joined by
Cindy McArthur from the Teaching from Space Office to discuss
educational activities involving astronaut and former teacher Dottie
Metcalf-Lindenburger during the STS-131 shuttle flight.
Metcalf-Lindenburger will be the last of the three school teachers
selected as mission specialists in the 2004 Educator Astronaut Class
to fly on the space shuttle. Arnold and Joseph Acaba flew on the
STS-119 shuttle mission in March 2009.

The educational activities on the STS-131 shuttle mission to the
International Space Station will focus on robotics and careers in
science, technology, engineering and math. The briefing also will
explain how educators can become involved in learning activities
during and after the shuttle mission.

Without robotics, major accomplishments of building the station,
repairing satellites in space and exploring other worlds would not be
possible. Metcalf-Lindenburger will operate the space shuttle's
robotic arm and a 50-foot Orbiter Boom Sensing System to inspect the
shuttle for any damage that might have occurred during launch or in
space. A digital camera and laser system on the boom's end provide
three-dimensional imagery used by analysts to assess the health of
the shuttle's heat shield.

The education briefing is part of a series of news conferences to
preview the STS-131 mission. Metcalf-Lindenburger and her crewmates
will be available at 1 p.m. during a crew news conference from
Johnson that will air on NASA TV. For Metcalf-Lindenburger's complete

NASA'S INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION PROGRAM WINS COLLIER TROPHY

WASHINGTON - NASA's International Space Station Program has won the 2009 Collier Trophy, which is considered the top award in aviation. The National Aeronautic Association in Washington bestows the award annually to recognize the greatest achievement in aeronautics or astronautics in America.

The association says it selected the station "for the design, development, and assembly of the of the world's largest spacecraft, an orbiting laboratory that promises new discoveries for mankind and sets new standards for international cooperation in space."

"We are very proud to receive the Collier Trophy," NASA Administrator Charles Bolden said. "This prestigious award is a testament to the dedication and hard work of thousands of people around the world. With our intention to extend station operations to at least 2020, there are limitless possibilities for science and technological breakthroughs."

The station is a joint project of NASA, the Canadian Space Agency, the European Space Agency, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency and the Russian Federal Space Agency. The orbiting laboratory is nearing completion and will mark the tenth anniversary of a continuous human presence in orbit later this year.

"We're honored to be recognized for our past achievements for building and operating the space station, and we're excited about the future," said Bill Gerstenmaier, associate administrator for NASA's Space Operations Mission Directorate. "There's a new era ahead of potential groundbreaking scientific research aboard the station."

Congress designated the space station a national laboratory in 2005. The station provides a research platform that takes advantage of the microgravity conditions 220 miles above Earth's surface across a wide variety of fields. These include human life sciences, biological science, human physiology, physical and materials science, and Earth and space science.

After completion of assembly later this year, the station's crew and its U.S., European, Japanese and Russian laboratory facilities will expand the pace of space-based research to unprecedented levels. Nearly 150 experiments are under way on the station. More than 400 experiments have been conducted since research began nine years ago. These experiments already are leading to advances in the fight against food poisoning, new methods for delivering medicine to cancer cells and the development of more capable engines and materials for use on Earth and in space.

Supporting an international crew of six, the station has a mass of almost 800,000 pounds and a habitable volume of more than 12,000 cubic feet. It is approximately the size of a five-bedroom home. The station uses state-of-the-art systems to generate solar electricity, recycle nearly 85 percent of its water and generate much of its own oxygen. Nearly 190 people have visited the station, which is supporting its 22nd resident crew.

The award will be formally presented to the International Space Station Program team on May 13. The trophy is named for Robert J. Collier, a publisher who commissioned it in 1910 with the intent to encourage the U.S. aviation community to strive for excellence and achievement in aeronautic development.

NASA AND NOAA'S GOES-P SATELLITE SUCCESSFULLY LAUNCHED

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- The latest Geostationary Operational
Environmental Satellite, or GOES-P, lifted off Thursday aboard a
Delta IV rocket at 6:57 p.m. EST from Space Launch Complex 37 at the
Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla. The new National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) satellite joins four other similar
spacecraft to improve weather forecasting and monitoring of
environmental events.

Approximately four hours and 21 minutes after liftoff, the spacecraft
separated from the launch vehicle. The NASA Deep Space Network
tracking site in Canberra, Western Australia, monitored the
spacecraft separation.

"It's a great day for NASA and NOAA, as this last launch completes the
spacecraft in the GOES N-P series," said Andre Dress, the NASA GOES
Deputy Project Manager. "It means the hard work and dedication from
this team during the past 12-plus years all has been worth it. Our
review of the spacecraft and launch vehicle data shows that GOES-P is
in a nominal transfer orbit with all spacecraft systems functioning
properly."

GOES-P is the third and final spacecraft in the GOES N Series of
geostationary environmental weather satellites. On March 13, GOES-P
is scheduled to be placed in its final orbit and renamed GOES-15.

NOAA has two operational GOES satellites hovering 22,300 miles above
the equator -- GOES-12 in the east and GOES-11 in the west. Each
provides continuous observations of environmental conditions in
North, Central and South America and the surrounding oceans. GOES-13
is being moved to replace GOES-12, which will be positioned to
provide coverage for South America as part of the Global Earth
Observing System of Systems, or GEOSS.

NASA contracted with Boeing Space and Intelligence Systems of Seal
Beach, Calif., to build and launch the GOES-P spacecraft.
Approximately 20 days after launch, Boeing Space and Intelligence
Systems will turn engineering control over to NASA. About five months
later, NASA will transfer operational control of GOES-15 to NOAA. The
satellite will be checked out and stored on-orbit. It will be
available for activation should one of the operational GOES
satellites degrade or exhaust their fuel.

NOAA manages the GOES program, establishes requirements, provides all
funding and distributes environmental satellite data for the United
States. NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.,
procures and manages the design, development and launch of the
satellites for NOAA on a cost reimbursable basis. NASA's Launch
Services Program at the NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida
supported the GOES-P launch in an advisory role.
