Windows XP SP2 download
The major difference is the new Security Centre that monitors your virus software to makesure it is uptodate and the upgraded Firewall that is now on by default. If you install another firewall with the new code, it will handover control to it and turn itself off. It only looks after incoming traffic, so it doesnt replace any of the third party firewalls.

IE now has a pop-up blockers, which has worked here perfectly. The rest are all the latest security releases and some that were never released till now. It has been pretty stable here since RC1 and RC2. Just don't tell Bill Gates, but I have been surprised how smooth the update was and how stable it has been.

I hate to say it, but I have been happy with the update so far. The new security center and the pop-up improvements are worth the upgrade.
David, I used to have Echolink working, but now, on a new PC with SP2, I cant get it to go. Analysis says a problem with UDP 5199.
I have been in to the firewall, allowed Echolink to run, added ports 5198,5199. I have Looked thru Norton 2004.
With my last computer, The problem was fixed by accessing the web interface for my ADSL modem, and adding the ports there.
I went into the interface yesterday, and the ports are still listed, but, does a differant PC have to enter them ports again??
I've just given up for now!!!
You might have to add ports 5198/5199 UDP and 5198/5199 TCP to the firewall exceptions. you should have 4 entries for thos port excpetions.
Thanx David, I'll try again!!
Well i cant get Echolink to work!? I've added ports, turned off every firewall, anti-virus and security setting I can find!! No go!!
It all used to work fine before SP2.
Time for a house call to Mr Gates me thinks!!
You are not alone. I am experiencing the exact same thing. If you ever figure this out please send me an email.

Thanks.
I'm still working on it va3maq, Echolink is too good a program to be stuffed up by this.
try here, I had no luck, but the more heads that look at it, then we may find out where we are going wrong.. (glad its not just me though!!)
73!

Thanks for the reply. I tried everthing that web page suggested and more and it still didn't work. I tried opening the UDP ports required and no luck. It's like XP SP2 is ignoring the fact that I am opening the ports as the Echo Link trouble shooter program always fails when it's testing UDP port 5198. Did you try the Echolink trouble shooter program? Is this where your's is failing also?
Exactly the same as you.
Spot on!
I think SP2 tells us what we want to kow, and just goes about its business doing something else!!!!
I have emailed the Australian MSN with a detailed report, and they should get back to me shortly, I'll let you know!!
Well I said I would report back....
here it is..

snip>
Thank you for contacting Microsoft Online Assisted Support. My name is ****..

You appear to be experiencing problems with Echolink, which is not a Microsoft product. For assistance with this particular problem you will need to directly contact the manufacturer of the product.

If you have contacted the manufacturer of the product and they have completed industry standard troubleshooting and referred you to Microsoft, please reply to this message, outlining in as much detail as possible the steps that were taken before you were directed to Microsoft.

** I then replied with a not so nice reply!! and the response was....

snip>
Unfortunately we are unable to assist you in getting Echolink to function which is why you need to firstly contact the manufactures of the product. The manufacture may be aware of this issue and have a patch to correct it.

The only support that we are able to office is in removing the SP2 update.

Please let me know what you decide.
I didn't do any better with the EchoLink support people. They just referred me to the support web page.

http://www.echolink.org/xp_firewall.htm

I cannot believe that we are the only two people with EchoLink and XP SP2 and this problem. Arrgh.
mmm I agree....
I will continue to ask around a bit, before I go to linux or something!!!!!!
73

Ok! for all the Spurts! its all to hard,to respond? credence for exellence dont exist?or were too scared? ok.?Do it myself ,and dont ask?
There was a known problem with the beta's/RC's and the serial number interface. The only option you have at this point is to install the released version of XP SP2 as Microsoft will no longer giver reg fixes for the beta's and the RC's.

You can download the SP2 release or user the IE update page.
