sookeye06, there are few ways to format a hdd. If a new WinXP will be installed, bootup sequence must be set to cdrom first in bios so the computer boots up from the cdrom.. After setting up the bios, save and exit then put the WinXP cd to the cdrom and press the reset. Select the option to install the WinXP when requested then select the format type when asked...rest will be done by the winxp. If something else to be installed then you may need to use a disk manager program suitable to your hdd brand...Find the disk manager program and prepare a bootable diskette to start from A: "floppy" drive then do low or high level formatting with system transfer...You can also use a bootable cdrom for the disk manager as well.. Good luck and let me know how you manage the task..

sookeye06, the process depens on what you want to format..such as a second hdd can be formatted through winxp as well...

the way i usually do a format is chuck the cd in first before i turn the computer on then the winxp setup begins and so on and asks if u want to delete the partition and then u format the HDD and then the install begins to install a fresh copy of winxp <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="images/icons/default/wink.gif" />

-.Laser.-, How would you know if your PCs bootup sequence set for CDROM? Sookeye06 saying he can not get the cdrom recognised, means either the cd media/drive faulty or the bios settings not right...In your case, its allready been set to use cdrom bootup...

sookeye06, if you know which files are missing, then transfer them from a friends pc or create another partition on your hdd with a partition sowtware so you can reinsttall winxp as fresh on it if you do not want to play with the existing one...You can not just cut and paste a file from xp cd as its been processed with system registery...
