This is a different topic its Roof Restoration!!
Yes I have Decided to get my poor 18 year old roof restored, yes that means re-beding, re-pointing and Re-painting and who do you get to do this Job???
So I decided to get 6 quotes from different companies just to see what I get for my money. Now I will fill you in. My roof was restored 8 years ago with the previous owner and some scumbag company did a shocker,"ITS ALL PEELING OFF"
Now I have done some homework prior to ringing for the quotes and I was told that to do a 100% job ALL, yes ALL, ALL that means 100% of the old paint has to come off, not just a minor pressure clean/seal/primer/ and final coats.
Out of the 6 companies only "ONE" told me he will not do it as he cannot guarantee the job as they will not be able to remove all of the existing paint.
I Asked all the restores what type and pressure their cleaners are, Hummmmm around 2500 to 4000 PSI, now that would not lift shit.
Last week I decide to do some homework and rang some professional Water Blasters Companies and I told them what I wanted to do was to remove the old flaking paint, but some was still reasonably stuck on, have you got any experience of this??
YES ! he said you won't take it off with 2500 to 4000 PSI you need over 5000 to 6000 PSI and it will remove everything, exact words 6000 PSI will remove the paint on a new car and leave dints with one swipe.
Now I spoke to a friend of mine in Sydney and he is a Roof Tiler and he CLEARLY told me that the re-cycling of old roofs to be repainted are causing a problem, so when they restore an old restored roof they don't muck around, they get the "BIG GUN" out and rip 100% of the old paint off and do a proper job of the preparation.
So what do these Queensland companies use these pissy low pressure guns that don't full remove the old paint?.
Out of the 6 quotes this is my impression
1/ Crook forget him
2/ a maybe but he told me he won't get all the paint off with his pressure cleaner, but he was honest with everything else.
3/Forget him
4/Forget him, no safety railing used and the dearest.
5 The biggest, won't do the job as he can't give me a guarantee, I asked why don't you use a stronger cleaner?,,,hummmm we don't have one..
6/ another wanker, full of shit!

What bothers me is I can ring a company that comes to my house with a 3 cylinder diesel pressure cleaner that spits out over 5000 PSI and he guarantees me there will be "NO PAINT LEFT" on it when I finish. So why can't the roof restorers do the same? Aren't they competent enough??.
By the look of it to do a proper job I will have to get the roof stripped separately from a water blaster company than call the Painters, not the so called restorers to finish the job.
Phil

Now the fun starts the job of restoring my roof was given to "Impulse Home Improvements" the salesman was full of charm and he guaranteed me a 100% job on the restoration which included the stripping of the paint, FULL re-beding, repointing, re-sealing, a prima bond and the final coats.
First day on the Job the Safety rail installers install the rails on the 2 storey house and break 3 tiles, if care was taken no tiles would have been broken.
Just after the rails were installed the guy to pressure clean my roof arrived with a pressure gun that made me laugh " I SAID YOU HAVE TO BE JOKING!! I CAN PISS HARDER THAN YOUR CLEANER!,he had one look at my roof and agreed and could'nt wait to get out of the place.
What bothers me is I repeated like a parrot, like a parrot, like a parrot to the salesman and to the manager send your biggest GUN OUT!!
The salesman said there biggest they have is around 4000 PSI now they can only find a biggest of 3000 PSI,Hummmmmm??????????.
Also on the rumour mill is that they want me to sign a disclaimer on the job that means no warranty, now why didn't the experienced saleman tell me that they could not remove all the paint!! because I repeated like a parrot, like a parrot, like a parrot and said to him what happens if you can't remove it all he said nothing about a disclaimer, all his charming personality wanted was my signature but now Impulse wants to move the goal post whilst the game is in motion.
Anyhow tomorrow one of their people are going to come out to re-inspect the roof to give me the bad news. In their contract it is written that a cancellation of contract by me will incur a 20% restitution. Now, if I don't sign the disclaimer and they want to pull out of doing the job, are they going to give me a 20% restitution for removing the pool solar heater, which covers approximately 35% of the roof??
Will keep all informed.
Phil

Jason,

How are you? Long time no hear. All I want is whats on my contract as since I have moved up here, all I seem to be doing is fighting City Hall. You shouldn't have to chase anyone to do the job correctly but I think these days you have to. As my neighbour said there are too many cowboys out there. I paid no deposit just signed the contract. I am Maltese and I am vindictive. You know what happened to the company I worked for in Sydney, what happened to them. I don't take a back step. I think my biggest problem is because I talk too much and am easy going, they think I am a sucker but you have got a Dr Jekyll/Mr Hyde over here, all I want is a fair to good job done and mainly no swifties to be done, like Fred has just emailed me. His brother was worried that the caps were not rebedded, just repointed as he was not home to watch them.

bye
Phil

Well one of Impulse's supervisers came out this arvo and all looks good,,nothing was mentioned about a disclaimer, and only positive talk was given how to remove the old coating on the roof.
The Pressure cleaner to be used should be able to do the job, the only trick is it requires two inputs of tap water from 2 different sources (use my next doors water + mine )by doing this the high pressure cleaner can be guaranteed a constant flow of water.
If the team coming on Friday week is as positive as this gentleman that came today we will strip this nightmare, as the superviser said this is the worst case of a pathetic roof restoration done years ago that he has EVER SEEN.
I also volunteered to help in any way! its in my interest to do what I have to to do a 100% job.
Also we will be doing a TOTAL 100% RE-BED.
So this is what we have agreed,
1/Pressure stripping using the maximuum PSI with two water supplies we expect about 95% will come off
2/Total re-bed
3/Complete re-pointing
4/I will scrape of what ever of the old coating is left with scraper, or my teeth if I have to.
5/Then another lower pressure Water clean without damaging the re-pointing
6/then the sealing
7/priming
8/then the final coats in Mist Green.

Lets see some action boys!!!!Next post will be after Friday 18th.
Phil

Well the next post is a little earlier as I was asked if I would like to start a little earliar!!like Thursday (yesterday). What a day the poor guy doing the paint sripping (coat stripping)worked his guts out removing the old coats of paint it took a long 5 hrs and this is round one, another round of selected stripping ( pieces that we missed will be done on Monday).
Normally you don't use this high pressure to remove previously painted roofs but in this case we had to as we had to get as much off as posable, holy hell paint and mortar from the cemented caps were flying everwhere!! so were you if you were blasted at by 3800 PSI.
The roof is approximately 95% stripped now, and while the water blaster was working I was inside the roof to check for water leaks, but lucky 99% of the sarking did its job but that 1% caused a laugh.
Only 2 weeks ago I watched a DVD on the Three Stooges being Plumbers and I laughed my head off when they connected an electrical pipe to a water pipe thus filling all the lights with water, Then the same happened here the 1% where the water came into the roof was where some dickhead put the sarking UNDER the Galvanised tray not OVER it like it should be so instead of the water going from the sarking to the gal tray it went under onto the plaster right above one of our upstairs toilets and into the back of the light fitting.
Because the light fitting was a big Glass ball type it filled with water and spewed onto the tiles and although the light was off it tripped the Safety switch but no problems here. Phil dismantled the light fitting and being an electrician disconnected it and cleaned up the mess in the toilet and told the pressure cleaner "keep going don't stop".
I spent all day on Friday hosing down the mess on the roof as you could imagine, there was paint (coating) splattered everywhere. It took me 1 1/2 hours to hose the roof down then it took 4 hours to clean the gutters out as they were chocka block with paint, cement, broken tiles and whatever, and they were hard to clean as the safety railing was in my way. There were 8 buckets full of the stuff.
Aren't Impulse lucky as they have someone like me that doesn't complain about the water in the roof which I expected to happen anyhow and I don't mind getting up there and helping the guys in any way I can, nor the time I spent washing and cleaning the gutters out. The guys did work very hard so its in my interest to do my bit. The gutters are that clean now you can see your face in them. Thanks to a good garden hose.
Now, this new high pressure water blaster had teething problems. Its water delivery supply tank had a faulty control valve so that meant either no water or too much water in the delivery tank so we needed a volunteer to stay there for 5 hours to play with the handle to control the water level. Now here is my poor missus sitting on a bucket playing with this handle and as the water blaster got closer to the front of the house she was getting wet so she had to grab the umbrella to protect herself. She finished with a sore back and a numb hand.
Darron, I hope you fix it before you come back on Monday (goes double for the missus)!!!!!!!!!!!!
Phil

Well today is Thursday and the primer and the sealer are down and all look good but not before a big scare.
Yesterday only 5 minutes after the sealer went down it rained and I was in a panic,,,,,,had a quick look this morning and some was damaged (washed away at 3.30 but it was hard enough to withstand the 8.30pm downpour.)
Well this morning the guys from Impulse came out and gave the roof another coat of sealer and its ok again whilst I was looking at the damn sky.
It tried to rain twice in the first 3 hrs but as of this moment it hasn't and the coating was quite hard by 5pm.
All should be finished by Monday if it doesn't rain and I bet you they will never forget my place.

The saga continues, I decided to inspect the roof this morning (SAT) and I got a shock!! there was big bubbles or blisters on all the caps around the roof.
I scraped the paint off around the caps and found the Pointing cement completely soft, I rang the superviser and he has suspicion that the pointing cement was OFF in other words FUCKED !! as he noticed the next day some on the outside edges of the Container that should be completely dry but was found to be soft and wet.
So what does this mean?, It means it TOTALLY has to be scraped off to the bedding cement and re-done, and what happens to the Primer sealer now??? ,to scrape this crap out you have to cut the above coates out of the way,,what happens if it strips back up the caps or down the tiles?? a razor knife should be used as I don't want edges.
Now to do this repair job you have to walk up and down on the existing primed and sealed tiles!! all that will accomplished will be loosening the base coats and more broken tiles!!!!.

I spoke to a friend of mine that has over 35 years in the painting industry and this is what he recommended:

When the roof was completely pressure cleaned and considering the tiles (most) were completely stripped of their glazing, which allowed moisture to enter the tile, the roof should not have been primed and sealed straight after rain. We should have had at least 3 dry days to allow the moisture to escape because what will happen is moisture will be trapped under the coats and when it comes to October/November/December (when the hot weather arrives), the moisture will come to the surface and cause blisters in the paint. The same should be for the pointing cement. The bedding cement should be completely dry and removed of its moisture before the pointing cement is used.

Personally, I think this good job is now stuffed because of the rush to prime and seal straight after rain or hosing down due to the house having very little sun on the roof in winter. To finish it off, its now the problem with the pointing cement being no good. Will keep everyone informed as to what happens in the week. I hope my friend is incorrect as he said very firmly that when the hot days come and if any moisture is trapped in the tiles, blisters will appear.

Phil

Phil
Nothing has changed, they are a bunch of cowboys, some is bad luck some is pure stupidity.
NOBODY IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WOULD PAINT STRAIGHT AFTER ALL THE RAIN YOU HAVE HAD UP THERE.
I can tell you what will happen, because time is money and they don't give a fuck they will paint straight after rain if it looks dry its good enough, but I can tell you that moisture is trapped under that paint and when the first series of hot days come you watch the bubbles and blisters come up.
The problem about roof restoration is its a lottery, if it rains or you have cloudy days or when they wash the roof they don't allow enough time for it to dry you will have problems in the near future.
Again keep a good eye on the roof when the heat starts because thats when the shit will hit the fan.
The big problem today is its always rush, rush, rush, time is money and considering they went to all that trouble to strip the roof (ONLY BECAUSE YOU WERE ON TOP OF THEM) only to stuff it this way and with the suspect pointing cement the manufacturer should be held responsible and all this repair work will do is cause unnecessary walking on freshly primed and sealed surface which will "HARM IT".
When they gouge the pointing cement out are they going to take care not to damage the painted surfaces on the caps and tiles (peeling it back) I bet not as this will take time and time is money.
A razor knife should be used first.
In my opinion sorry to say, the job now is stuffed. DON"T PAY THEM and if you have paid a considerable deposit don't pay the rest, let them take you to court.
Phil you getting soft in your old ages!!! we all know what happened to that Electrical mob in Sydney YOU CLOSED THEM DOWN, they took you lightly and they lost the lot, Get the boys with the cameras out again. Its about time they clean up this industry.
Fred

Phil
My idiot neighbour paid $8200 for a roof restoration and he also had trouble with the company
1/ Blocked drain pipes with concrete.
2/ Bent gutters where the ladder was.
And to put salt to the injury he found out that he could have had the roof replaced with new tiles for $10,800.
Steve

NO COMMENT PETER
I would do something like that do you know over 30 people lost their jobs over that incident and they blamed me and another.

The point is if you say that I haven't got the guts to stand up to any management you are wrong.

Back to the Roof restoration, well what a Bastard of a day it was. I spent from 8.30 AM till 5pm scraping the Fucked, Not good, still very soft Pointing cement, one of the contractors helped me from 8.30AM till 3pm but he had to go to another job, but I got stuck into it to remove anything that was still soft. We removed around 75% of the pointing cement and all I hope is the stuff which remained will not fester up in the next few days/weeks/years.
Again I washed the roof at around 5pm to get all the crap off that I didn't clean up with the broom and cleaned the gutters out AGAIN!.
I have been very patient with Impulse Home Improvements QLD but my patience is running very thin.
Apparently they buy this pointing cement + all other Roof restoration products from "Modern" yes we have all seen their ads on TV and I don't think Impulse should be held responsible for this fuck up, their guys doing the job have been 95% ok even If I had to supervised them.
At the end off the day Impulse will have to be compensated for massive waste of time from the manafucturer of this defective product.
I also want to be compensated for what I have had to go through and I know that this roof will never be what it should have been. My personal opinion, all this excessive walking today will have caused damage to the base coats and remember that the final coats sit on the base coats so you can draw your conclusion from that.
Being stupid like I am, I did pay halfway through the completion of the job but trust me, that won't be the problem.
P.S. I used a video camera today so I have the evidence in case this matter has to go further.

Phil

[ 14. Hi Phil looks like you’re having problems again
I think you should get a colour bond roof it would of been less stress and probably cheaper both financially and to your health (you don’t need to be up on that roof having to do there job)
But you are not the only one having problems
my brother in-law is a roof tiler and is always have to re roof theses stuff up to the people that can afford it and he thinks that all this roof restoration is a con because the tiles when they are manufactured Are glazed in a hot oven and the glazing is not porus i.e. how does the paint stick properly
I have not seen a good job yet when it come to roof restoration they all look like some has dropped a can of solar guard on the roof and they have just tried to cover it up by spreading it all around if they are charging anything like $8300 then get your money back and put in a Colour bond roof it might even be cheaper and last for ever and with the silver back insulation they are not a noisy when it rains and they look very good

Any way talk to you soon

Ps have to send you some photos of me mowing the lawn

Jason mowing the lawn????? come on thats impossible
Back to the restoration job by Impulse the boys came out this arvo to do the re-pointing and it was hard in no time.
Back to the crap in the Blue labelled buckets, could you believe I still have some that I scraped off the roof in a Ice cream bucket and its still soft??.
The trouble with the Manafucturers are they don't give a shit about the customers and by the sound of it so does Modern the supplier to Impulse.
Will wait! I teach a lot of people how to use the Internet, I always put My site as one of their Favourites so it gives them something to look at, now they look at my site and pass it to their friends and so on, so on, so bad publicity is not what any business would like.
Phil

Phil
My Girlfriends dads house had its roof restored and they did a crap job.
Four years later its as dull as concrete and flaking everywhere. Another thing, is Impulse actually a company of Modern? or do they stand alone?.
What happens if Impulse go belly up? What happens to your warranty then?.
Some nasty companies have a habit of closing down and popping up with a new name and they don't have to honour any warranty. My brother Jon is a Solicitor and he read your post about your problem and commented about it to me.
Best of luck Phil
Cathy

Cathy How are yoy?
Yes that could be a big problem it happens too much these days, companies closing down and firing up under a new name.
Don't worry I always keep my eyes and ears open.

The roof was finished today, weather was good for a change and it looks good. I am still concerned that some of that pointing cement in the blue bucket still exists and I hope in the near future it doesn't cause any problems. The only other things I have to complain about is, and the management should train their people about this, 1. do not pressure clean tiles on an ashphalt drive way because I have now 29 images of tiles on my drive way.
2. Its just as well that I decided to put mesh on the downpipes otherwise I would have had blocked drains by now.
3. The gutter where the ladder leans on is buckled, they should use the spacer blocks inserted inside the gutter to stop this problem.
Now I would do this so why don't others? My next biggest concern is, the cowboys that come in three weeks time to remove the safety railing, how many tiles are they going to break?
Phil

Mick thats no worry thay have relaced them to count but they are supposed to leave me 6 in hand, thats in the contract.
But the saga continues.,,,,I repeat like a parrot, like a parrot, like a parrot, because the trees cover the house in winter it takes time to dry the due on the roof, its normally dry by 10.30 to 11.00AM.
Now I repeated the day before that to arrive around 11.30AM so by 12 noon we can reseal the damaged areas (faulty Pointing cement)and give it around 1 HR to dry before putting the final coat on arond 1 to 1.15PM and it takes around 1Hr and 10 minutes to put the final coat on the total roof so that put the finish time around 2.10 to 2.25 PM now that would have been ok.
BUT they put the final coat at 2pm and finished at 3.10 pm that puts it DANGER time for the dew that arrives around 5PM
So what does all this crap mean? They FUCKED it again the last 6 rows of tiles that I can see on the ladder closest to the gutter (LAST PAINTED) one in 10 tiles has runs in it, but I cannot see higher up the roof as I don't wont to walk on it yet.
Now remember I told them to get here at noon and also rang them in the morning telling him NOT TO BE LATE BECAUSE OF THE DEW PROBLEM,,,,HELLO IS ANYBODY HOME
I studied on the net the manufacture of the coating and it tells you all the spec,s and I also rang them in South Australia.
Tell me all!!!!!!!! where is the problem here where is the problem !!!!!!!!.
Phil

The problem Phil, it lies in the all mighty dollar and also they probably only find one in a hundred customers that checks their work fully day by day.
You can see that they need to go back to school because they can't count, if you need 2 to 3 hrs drying time at a given temperture, lets say 3 hrs at 20 Degrees drying time for the dew not to effect the coating that means if the dew starts to arrive at 5 pm the calculation is:
5PM -3Hrs thats 2pm and 1 Hr to coat it so you would start at 1pm. Is that hard?, no its not, its just that they want to do a number of jobs in one day and the hrs don't add up.
This industry has a bad image in Melbourne and its time they regulate it.
Phil we love your forum here at Uni, this roof fiasco has kept you from doing transponder watching.
THUMBS DOWN TO ROOF RESTORATION.
Steve

All finished !! I repaired all the damaged last front 6 rows which were affected by the dew, also I found some of the caps to have been affected too.
My compressor (with a 30M hose)and the Simpson spay gun did the job with ease, the jet and nozzle was adjusted to spray this thick coating and it did a perfect job, actually the runs were completely not visible with one coat.
In the next few weeks I will go up and apray the barge caps with my smaller simpson spray gun which is very good to spray on a straight line.

Next big problem is the guys coming back to remove the safety rails. Is it possible to remove these rails without fucking anything???? I'll be glad when they come back in two weeks and get out of my sight. I will have a final post about this disaster in the next few weeks and thanks to all those many people who emailed me with similar problems with other companies. Send your complaints to the Department of Fair Trading.

Phil

I have been reading these post about Roof restorations and it worries me as we had our roof restored at Chermside only 2 months ago.
Being an office worker I don't like getting on rooves but my son will be over tomorrow to get up to inspect it.
My brother at Albany Creak also had his done 2 weeks earlier and he also will inspect it to see if it has been done correctly.
I am a bit worried as you said about the moisture affecting the final finish of the job and the final coat did go down late in the afternoon 2.30PM, thanks for this information because none of us suspected anything about the problem with rain or the dew.
George.

Well, my son got up on the roof today and guess what we found? Blisters that were soft on the side of the concrete caps up the top. Also, on the shadowed side of the house the paint had runs throughout the whole length of the roof.
Another thing he noticed that the same side didn't have the gutters cleaned out, they were full of broken bits of concrete and tile. We also found 6 broken tiles. On Monday morning we will be ringing up the company and complaining and I want answers!!! As for my brothers house, I am still waiting for him to ring me tonight.
George

WELL! WELL! WELL! what do we have here? more skeletons on someone's roof, see now you know why it is important to check the work stage by stage.
I will be having my safety railing removed early next week and I have bet my mate a carton of beer that they will break a tile or scratch one,,,anymore offers!!!!
Next week I will be putting my final post on roof restoration and I will put a list of do's and don't + what I think that has to be done.
You can try your luck on the Roof Restoration Association found in the Yellow pages but best of luck as they take down your details and never ring back, that happened to me 3 times and finally got through after the roof was finished, NO GOOD TO ME!.

George let me know about your brothers place. Also a neighbour came around late this arvo and told me that one of my neighbours just had his roof restored in Henry St Cashmere (around Corner),I will be going for a visit tomorrow as I know the Young guy who Owns the place.
Phil

Phil
My brothers house is not as bad as mine, he told me parts of the roof were not painted, some slight runs again on the non sunny side and the gutters were not cleaned out, nor did they block the downpipe as he can see the rubbish caught around the first bend.
Now if this causes a blockage THEY WILL HAVE TO DIG the concrete up as the pipes run fully and parallel with the Concrete driveways. So here the roof job is fair but the other is a absolute disgrace.
Their Phone will ring on Monday and its not Impulse.

Phil
My Brother had a plumber come out today to check the totally blocked down pipe, he removed it and it was full of small to medium size bits of the old bedding cement.
The problem is the plastic pipe is fully blocked and cannot be cleaned as the plumber said if he uses an electric eel it will spear side ways and break the plastic pipe.
So how can it be cleaned?, it can't. I have a 25M stamped driveway it will have to be completely dug up.
My Brother is fuming the plumber said they can cut and repair the concrete driveway but both of us say that is not acceptable.
The complete section will have to be removed and replaced at their expense. To me this industry has no control and the Department Of Fair Trading will get a letter very soon.
Thank you Phil for having a post on roof restoration as if it was not for you none of us would have inspected our roofs in the first place.
George

No Problems George.
I am still waiting for the safety rail contractors to come out, They were supposed to have come out today but they didn't at my expense, LOST TIME.

PLEASE TO ALL THE OTHERS THAT HAVE EMAILED ME ABOUT THEIR ROOF RESTORATION PLEASE JOIN AND PUT YOUR DISGUST ON THIS FORUM SO EVERYBODY CAN READ IT.
WE WON'T BITE YOU I PROMISE !!!!!.

George PUT THE NAME OF THE COMPANY ON THE FORUM so all can steer away.

Just to let you all know being the Administrator of Aus-city the site usage meter has hit the roof and guess what?? "Controversy corner" rates up the top and the threads on Roof Restoration being the second highest outside the "WAR IN IRAQ" post.
The site meter for last month was 34,667 not bad for a small forum.
I wonder how many people will still decide to get their rooves restored?, but most importantly for the ones that still want their roof restored THEY NEED TO CHECK THE CONTRACTORS WORK DAILY.

"Oh" I love the Internet I can post anywhere around the world.

In the next few days I will post a list of what I think are the DO's and don'ts of roof restoration. Trust me it will help all and maybe the owners and manager might get a few tips too.
Phil

The contractors came out today to remove the safety railing and I asked them to PLEASE Don't break any tiles. Well they broke a little piece on the under edge of one of the tiles but otherwise no problems.
The other problem was when the Safety railings were removed the tile above was able to be put back to its correct length leaving a little unpainted strip (20 mm) up the top, I will fix that.
After reading emails from other people about roof restorations there is no doubt there are some cowboys out there so all I can say is if you still want to restore your roof follow this.

1/ Always get at least 8 quotes, you will get a surprise on the difference between the quotes.
2/ On all the quotes I had only 2 said I needed a total re-bed all the others were blind and charged more.
3/Before you sign the dotted line read the fine-print on the rear, you could get a shock.
4/Don't bother ringing the 1300 number "ROOF RESTORATION ASSOCIATION" they're never there and if they're there they ask for your number and never ring back, thats what happened to me.
5/as these products used for roof restorations are affected by weather, check the weather report first, don't allow to put the pointing cement/primers sealers or final coats down if showers or rain is suspected, don't rely on one Television stations weather report, check others or other means.
5A/ YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE TO TELL THIS TO THE CONTRACTORS THEY SHOULD KNOW AUTOMATICALLY, BUT ARE THEY,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
6/BLOCK the downpipes before starting, I blocked mine with bird wire a week before.
7/Its in the owners interest that when pressure cleaning (IF YOU CAN) enter inside your roof and follow the contractor under the tiles just in case if water blasts up the tiles and floods your roof, if you have sarking you are 95% safe but houses without sarking could be a problem
8/houses like mine that had their rooves restored 16 years ago and it was coming off, it is recommended to TOTALLY remove all the old paint and out of the 8 quotes only Impulse said we will give it a go, Modern Roofing said they can't remove it and gave excuses and so did all the other contractors (we will paint over it), I had to laugh as Impulse's came out first with a pressure cleaner that I could piss harder than, I told the contractor take it home mate and bring back the big one, so after speaking the the sales manager from Impulse they decided to use another contractor a new (4000 PSI) pressure cleaner.
I MUST WARN EVERYONE IF THIS METHOD OF EXTREME PRESSURE IS TO BE USED TO REMOVE PREVIOUSLY PAINTED ROOVES IN POOR CONDITION YOU MUST GO INTO YOUR ROOF WITH BUCKETS AND PLENTY OF RAGS AS 4000 PSI pushes water up ANYWHERE and you can guarantee you will get water in your roof,,,DON'T TAKE A CHANCE.
All I wanted was to rip 99% of the old paint off and although water came into the roof I chased it and dried it immediately (sorry Modern and the other companies you said it could not be done 4000 PSI and persistence did it).
8/Summer and winter
doing the job in winter can bring some problems, DEW!!! check what time the dew removes itself off the roof, if you have no or very little sun allow longer time before allowing pointing cement/primer/sealer or final coat to go down
9/if it takes 2 hrs to dry in winter at a 20 degree day the job must be finished before 2.30 so the dew doesn't stuff the freshly painted surfaces.
10/if they come too late in winter tell them to come back another day, its your house.
11/DON"T LET THEM CLEAN replacement tiles on your driveway or on your grass, at least the grass will grow again, the Asphalt driveway won't.
12/ check the work in stages, Don't trust anybody, if you can, like me, take time off work to supervise the work, don't trust their supervisor, he is on their side not yours!!!.
13/Always ask for some primer/sealer/final coat to be left for you in the future just in case "BATS" crap on your roof, Bat crap eats ANYTHING, plus you might need some for replacement tiles in the future.
14/Make sure they clean the gutters out before your final payment. 14 out of all the emails I received said "THE GUTTERS WERE FULL OF RUBBISH".
15/Support the gutters with blocks, ladders with big guys going up and down all day will leave you with "BENT GUTTERS"

If I remember any more I will add them in the next few days.

On a final note Thank-you Impulse For doing a good job that other dick heads could not do and you were very fairly priced, its a pity a bit of common sense and NOT LISTENING to the owner (Me Phil) about the dew problem was not listened to, but after reading other peoples emails and posts on this forum about their problems mine were nothing, I was sort of unlucky about the rain, I knew it was going to rain, the Satellite weather channel told me that and for the Defective Pointing cement well I was unlucky.
And for any company that is reading this Don't rely on the Gangs supervisors to check the work, you need someone of higher authority to check that all of the above is being followed (blocked downpipes and dug up driveways its just not on)sometimes supervisors get a bit slack.
So what I am trying to say is you managers get off you Bum's and do random checks and talk to the customers and educate your contractors on the do's and don'ts of roof restorations.
Phil

Good one phil!
Put a add in the paper for a "X" amount to supervise your roof restorations,we in Sydney have had similar Problems rush, rush, rush any luck and the owner won't notice.
Phil I dare you, your good for a bet,Put an add in your local rag, you could get a shock!,the one thing I know about you talking to people that know you from the water board days is you can't be bribed, and you DON't take a backward step.
Peter
PS your theory is still used today """THE G CLAMP THEORY""" For those who don't know what I am talking about don't bother, but don't be caught by it.
