The competition is hotting up it seems.
Fiji TV have discovered that wireless internet company Unwired interferes with C-Band satellite reception, as broadcasters in Australia have found out. Problem is Fiji TV's satellite DTH service is on C-Band - oh dear.
Enter the "greater minds" in Fiji TV who started blaming everyone for their stupidity. It's rumoured that they even blamed PBS for causing the interference ! (PBS is on Ku-Band).
I don't have any problems where I live as yet but what a mess Fiji TV have got themselves into. Give it time someone nearby will subscribe to Unwired internet and bye bye goes my C-Band Fiji TV. Pity though because they have better programming than PBS.

You think they would have done there homework first but on the other hand I think unwired internet has a case to answer and I'm waiting for someone to take them on in the courts. My neighbour had unwired internet and he removed the service (it was shit anyhow) as I told him it was effecting some of my c/band services, Its just as well he is a good neighbour. Again I think unwired internet have a case to answer over this matter.

There is a rumour getting around Fiji saying when UBI get there English channels PBS will get the flow on with some. Now I wonder if this is just a rumour or has some fact in it.
I bet APSATTV will love this I give him 5 minutes and he will be on the Phone to Fiji TV.

Well you never know on both counts.

You never know your luck in the wide world of Pay television
Posted By: apsattv Re: PBS versus Fiji TV - Fri 14 Oct 2005 01:51:AM
umm the Turner channels are available to almost any provider as long as you can make up the minimum subscriber level requirements

cnn,espn etc
Posted By: Jedi Knight Re: PBS versus Fiji TV - Fri 14 Oct 2005 02:16:AM
It would be good to see them on all providers large or small.

Posted By: Jedi Knight Re: PBS versus Fiji TV - Fri 14 Oct 2005 08:17:PM
You wonder why they used C/band for there service, but I bet it was going for a Bargain price. Plus If I'm correct there is no more KU transponders left on 701.
Posted By: apsattv Re: PBS versus Fiji TV - Fri 14 Oct 2005 08:44:PM
actually I think you will find mr Satfacts is annoyed by the fact that they promoted that FIJI 1 would be a fta service and then they changed their tune.

Fiji were totally limited as in footprint and in capacity available in that part of the world.

So they had no other choice in terms of Cband and Ku.

The Fiji Govt like most others must of seen the $$$$$$$$$$$$$ signs when unwired came along wanting the Cband frequencys.

Anyway correct filtering sorts out the Unwired problem in most cases.
Posted By: Jedi Knight Re: PBS versus Fiji TV - Fri 14 Oct 2005 08:49:PM
But for the average Tom Dick and Harry in Sydney that live near the city they are totally wipped out and I don't think its fair for them. C Band people were around long before the unwired stuff and I think they should be paying for the filtering.

This means they have re-design the current setup.

Fiji TV advertised thay they were going to broadcast the Tri Nations League last Saturday - ran scrolls all over their programs. At the last minute they put up an apology saying they would not show the game.
PBS had it live, but technically the Fiji TV people would have "persuaded potential PBS subscribers" from signing up by running this mis-information.
Talk about dirty pool. These Fiji TV people appear to have lost the plot. If you can't compete fairly, you play dirty.
Reckon it will come to lawyers at five paces soon ??
Posted By: Jedi Knight Re: PBS versus Fiji TV - Tue 18 Oct 2005 02:30:AM
Typical dirty tactics from a desperate pay tv company.

Lawyers at 5 paces?

Wow UBI have some experience there!
Posted By: bill_eric Re: PBS versus Fiji TV - Tue 18 Oct 2005 04:51:PM
Ha ha ha, that's a good one - not an original, but a good one.

Some more exciting news for you. Word has it that Fiji TV went crying to the Fiji Government about Unwired and the interference problem. Wanted to get the Govt to remove Unwired off the air. They were told in no uncertain terms to go away.

Another rugby game between Aust and NZ due tomorrow - wonder if Fiji TV will advertise THIS match ??

Wonder why the ABC still allow their Asia Pacific program to continue on Fiji TV's Sky Pacific seeing as it is now subject to Unwired interference. Hardly a good platform to support. Hope they do though because I enjoy the variety of the program. Some good entertainment here.

Yes and some good entertainment on the forum too.

Hey Bill Eric

There is more to it than just Fiji TV being upset. 3.5ghz transmissions are causing problems for a number of satellite broadcasters.

Apstar for example wanted to offer Cband Telecoms to the Islands via 134 or 138E

They already had to shift the 3.4/3.5ghz transmission of CSKYNET to new transponder due to T.I in places like Hong Kong and other countries.

Imagine you designed and launched a new satellite. Only to find in many countries the lower transponders were unusable.

In fact I was asked yesterday if I could locate an Unwired terminal for testing re emission levels etc
Posted By: Jedi Knight Re: PBS versus Fiji TV - Tue 18 Oct 2005 08:45:PM
Thats why I wonder how they ever got away with it, and I'm still waiting for someone to take legal action against them as I have friend in Five Dock in Sydney that have been wiped out and unwired internet remarks are "NO Comment" in other words they don't give a shit.
Posted By: Jedi Knight Re: PBS versus Fiji TV - Tue 18 Oct 2005 08:49:PM
Again I don't know how they are getting away with it, Like you said the lower freq Tx's are stuffed
Posted By: bill_eric Re: PBS versus Fiji TV - Tue 18 Oct 2005 09:23:PM
One of the basics of satellite design is gathering information on what is used and where it is used. You then design your satellite based on that, plus requirements of particular nations, regions etc etc.
It is a long involved process. Basically you need to be awake and aware of what is going on in the world of frequency usage.
Having said that, you obviously cannot allow for irresponsible governments allowing people like Unwired to run services that require relatively high power to operate alongside services that operate on very very low power levels.
The use of the frequency around the extended C-Band is nothing new. It has been around for years. It's just that no one has lobbied or licensed that frequency spectrum and reserved it for satellite operation.
You also have the LNB manufacturers building cheap and simple LNBs that, surprise surprise, are very wide-band and get swamped by the adjacent frequencies.
When Unwired started in Australia they caused a mass of problems. All broadcasters had to fit filters to their C-Band antennas in a hurry.
So when Fiji TV decided to go satellite C-Band and Apstar went to provide C-Band services into some area where wireless internet was working, they plainly did not do their homework.
Agree with Phil and that is how do the Unwired people get away with it.
