A very shallow magnitude 3.2 earthquake was reported early evening near Marrakech, Marrakesh-Safi, Morocco.
According to the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera, IPMA), the quake hit on Thursday, November 16th, 2023, at 6:39 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 0 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Oukaimeden (pop. 4,400, 40 km away), Marrakech (pop. 839,300, 52 km away), and Setti Fatma (pop. 22,300, 58 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
