Jason,

With any high speed internet connection invest in a good firewall and virus scanner. I run a Windows 2000 Advanced Server acting as a NAT, firewall, router and LAN data storage.

I run firewall also on my clients blocking applications on specific ports to stop those annoying adds and stuff. Basically EVERY application on my clients are port limited and some are also IP limited.

Don't run applications on your LAN/WAN server, use it purely as a bridge / firewall between your LAN and WAN. This eliminates any chance of a appliation running on your server that should not. Remember anything BEHIND your firewall unless you know what your doing, has complete access to your LAN and WAN. I have no applications in my servers firewall

Invest in a good firewall. Free ones are okay for dial up. For high speed connection - invested in a GOOD firewall. Remember the old saying 'you only get what you pay for'.

Keep your machines always patched and install the automatic Windows Update feature.

On your LAN forget hubs, waste of time. Hubs broadcast every packet to every machine. Always use a switch. Switches only pass traffic my MAC address to the appropriate MAC address. Not only will you see a speed increase as you eliminate collisions, you go to full duplex mode instead of half duplex with a hub.

Hi Jason,

Your firewall depends on the number of users. I would recommend running a firewall on your clients as this will stop adds and so forth.

This type of 'dual' firewall blocks incoming (on the server) and outgoing (on your individual client pcs). Another reason is if one of your clients has a trogan virus, its free to connect to the internet via the server, and of course get replies beack through the firewall since it requested the data

I run Sygate Firewall Professional. It is charged basically how many users. Its not cheap, I am running 5 users and it cost be about 150.00 USD (that is lifetime free upgrades). Check out http://www.sygate.com for the details.

I am also running their Sygate Office Network, as do not use Microsoft Internet Sharing with firewalls, it does not work properly and things can get past.

You may be better running Sygate Home Network. I only use Office as it supports VPN tunnelling.

Hope this helps...

Jason,

I forgot virus scanner. I run Norton Corporate on all my PCs. Its cheaper when you got a lot of PCs and if you run any server OS you HAVE to use a high end product, nothing else installs.
