Are there any updates on the Balkan channels. The BOM feed is getting boring.

It has been several weeks since they came on, and nothing much has changed.

Can anybody shed some light. There are a few cable channels esp from teh balkans that have popped up. Get some programming on so it can be worth while.

Liski said few suprises for EVERYONE. I don't think he meant new channels with that.

why would a new maco or arab channel be a surprise for everyone?

Well Lazer I can tell you, as you know, I'm Greek.

For the record I am NOT Dr Gonzo, who by my best guess looks to be Macedonian, seeing as he's got a gripe about boring Macedonian content, which I don't watch and couldn't care less about.

As far as work together goes, the only guy I know who has any knowledge of TARBS and UBI is a greek bloke in the department next to me, whose parents used to be with TARBS, but are not with UBI. He couldn't give a rats ass bout european satellite from what I understand.

I'm behind a proxy here at work. Maybe the other offices in our building use the same proxy, as we're like a complex of 10 buildings here in Richmond, VIC.

It'd be funny if Dr Gonzo is a work "neighobour" I didn't know I had. LOL

LOL

Guess Dr Gonzo and I won't be having lunch together then. Unless he is indeed in the Richmond VIC area.

I used to run phpBB on a personal server for me and my friends, and its IP logging never really worked all that well. Specially when friends were behind their ISP's transparent proxy.

balkancic,

The major surprise for March was the release of information that UBI are changing to Irdeto - which to me is a really big thing and to others are very bad thing as they will loose their free viewing of UBI.

Within 3 months you will see BOM turn into the channel it’s meant to be by showing programming of/from UBI/K-15 productions, TERA Televizia Bitola, independent TV stations from Macedonia plus material locally produced by the Macedonian Community in Australia.

Also the rest of the Balkan channels will come as in Croatian, Serbian and Bosnian which will start to pop up on UBI. When it happens it will happen pretty fast.

I think it’s better to get everyone swapped over then launch the Balkan package.

From what I’ve heard the Balkan package will be once nice package – I wouldn’t be surprised if the total Balkan package ends up with more then 10 channels!

Hot Bird 7A was successfully launched last Saturday and is in the proper orbit (unlike Arabsat 4A, to my great chagrin). I really hope that UBI is negotiating to bring some of the channels from the Telekom Srbija transponder from Hot Bird 7A to Telstar 10. TV Studio B would be a great start, and RTS 1 and 2 would be icing on the cake. If UBI could obtain those 3 channels, I'm sure you would get many new subscribers in Australia, Asia and Africa.

The Studio B web site has been "under construction" for the past 6 years -- in other words, the site never had any content. The editorial policy was all together revolutionary at the time – the city radio with lots of music and a three-minute conversation at the most between two music numbers.
By 1971 the Second channel was launched on medium waves, primarily focused on music, with news at one-hour intervals. Later on the Third channel was launched for classic music excursively, followed by production of (gramophone) records and production of TV commercials.

In the nineteen eighties, the trademark of Studio B was Duško Radović, the poet for “small and big children”. His aphorisms and humoristic/satirical comments in the famous show “Good morning Belgrade” were sincere and hearty view from 21st floor of “Beogradjanka” palace of Belgrade and Belgraders. Duško Radović has also created a logo of Studio B.
Another trademark of Studio B also came from the Morning program – Djoko Vještica, the journalist, editor and host who has created new standards of communication with the municipal companies by direct radio contacts with their competent people and not a bit delicate enquiring about the situation in the municipal services system.

"Studio B" Independent Television (NTV Studio B)) was launched for the first time on March 28, 1990, but was soon closed by the authorities of that time. NTV Studio B was again launched on November 19, 1990 as the only station of editorial policy quite different from national media then. It was then when Studio B became joint-stock company. The following attempt to extinct Studio B was made on March 9, 1999, when the regime then was disturbed by the scenes broadcasted from the streets of Belgrade, witnessing the first large-scale opposition protest. Studio B has not become extinct after all; nevertheless its business partners and advertising managers have been standing later on strong pressures.

As of 1996 the foundation rights over Studio B has been assumed by the Assembly of the City of Belgrade (then under control of socialists), thereby the right to nominate the management – which all resulted in leaving of some of reputable journalists. Some of them came back in 1997, following the change of city authorities, but were faced again with heavy political influence climaxed on May 17, 2000. Studio B was then captured by use of police force, the editorial team was dissolved and the pro-regime media journalists positioned instead, who turned RTV Studio B into "4th channel of the national television".

At this time Studio B system consists of:
TV Studio B – 24-hour program, with news, contact and talk-show programs, music, films, serials and documentary programs, with about 3 million viewers within the range of 100 km around Belgrade
Radio Studio B 1 - 24-hour program, with news, contact and talk-show programs and mainstream music
Radio Studio B 2 - music radio of much sophisticated sound
Radio Studio B 3 – known as "Concert of Studio B", emitting exclusively classical music

Indeed - Studio B is on Eutelsat W2 at 16.0°E as part of the Total TV package ( www.sbb.co.yu). I expect that when Telekom Srbija launches its package on Hot Bird 7A (this should happen within a matter of weeks), Studio B will be a part of that package as well. Studio B has a sophisticated program which is fairly similar to RTS & BKTV - talk shows, news, documentaries, culture. Not the folk trash like Pink & BN.

if UBI can get Studio B, RTS 1 & 2 i will suscribe straight away.

There is also www.b92.net (i am not the biggest fan of it but it is very popular)

Let me get one thing straight, Pink is absolute trash very few people watch it in Serbia, it has a few ok programs and thats it.

BK is much better and it would be good to see it with these channels ( i don't know if that's possible due to the rights)

I guarantee a lineup of Studio B, RTS Sat (or Rts 1&2) and BK/B92 outclasses the lineup of Pink, Bk and BN ANY DAY!!!!!!!!!!

balkancic,

If you knew what went on then you would know why these things happen and change.

I believe it's in UBI best interests to keep it's intentions to themselves and only release the information when ready.

No one is dragging anyone in – if you wish to watch then join now!

All I know is that the Balkan Package will be one very nice package when completed. UBI didn’t invest time and money for no reason. The Greeks waited patiently and got a very good package in the end and so will the Balkans.

According to a survey performed by AGB Nielsen Media Research, the following 10 television stations had the highest ratings in Serbia in Dec. 2005:

1. RTS 1 - 24.9%
2. Pink - 23.8%
3. BK - 11.1%
4. B92 - 6%
5. RTS 2 - 5.5%
6. RTS 3 - 3.3%
7. Studio B - .9%
8. Novi Sad 1 - .9%
9. Kanal D - .7%
10.SOS - .6%

(see http://72.14.203.104/search?q=cache...p;hl=en&gl=ke&ct=clnk&cd=10)

My observations:

1. RTS 3 will be extinguished this year, so they will be out of the picture.
2. The B92 terrestrial program has the rights to NBA games and US shows like "Friends", etc. - hence their high rating, which would probably not be reflected in a satellite version of the channel which would lack such content.
3. TV Pink broadcasts Latino soap operas which are very popular in Serbia these days - would this type of programming really appeal to the diaspora?
4. The Council for Broadcasting (Savet za radiodifuziju) will be issuing TV and radio broadcast licenses this year. Big media players like Rupert Murdoch have already announced that they will apply for licenses. So if Serbia gets its own version of an excellent, foreign-owned TV station like RTL in Croatia, this will change things quite a bit.

What i know is that i spend 6 months a year in Serbia, and i know how much people hate Pink (mind you the actuall domestic program is much better than what they show on sat). It may be popular with the rural community, therefore it can explain the fact (which i dont dispute for 1 sec) that it is the most popular Sat program for the Balkans (since 95% of balkan diaspora is from rural parts).

Also with regards to RTS, isn't RTS Sat a combined version of RTS 1 & 2. That how it was during the Tarbs days.

According to new information, UBI will be issuing new Irdeto STB in exchange for your MDS STB. The only problem I have with this is, what happens if you paid for your STB? You own it, UBI does not have any right to demand it.

It's just a swap yeah you might own the MDS box but when you get the new Irdeto box then you own that so whats the difference?

Is it like your goin to use the MDS box or will it just sit in the cupboard and become a antique of satellite TV like the DGT 400's when they became redundant LOL

RATLSNAKE,

I don't have the information as yet but I see it this way if you wish to get the free box upgrade you'll need to exchange it. If you wish to keep the MDS then you might have to purchase the new UBI IRD.

You might of purchased the IRD yourself but UBI is offering you a box upgrade free of charge.

New UBI subscribers after the 28th April will need to purchase the new IRD and will not be given a free IRD or a subsisdised price.

This is what I personally think but never know what is going to happen.

Well obviously I am not being given a choice in the matter, but I would love to hear an official statement from UBI explaining why they feel they need to collect all the old boxes. Are they planning to sell them overseas, even though they are now second hand?

But to a more pressing question, as I type this all Greek channels except RIK SAT are advertising this new UBI infomercial about subscribing non-stop in an infinite loop. It is also on all the Maco channels, yet not on any other channels.

How long is this going to go on for? As a genuine subscriber I am being inconvenienced and not receiving the service I pay for, just because other people are crooks.

RATLSNAKE

As stated many times more information will be released shortly.

I don't know the length of time the promo will be run for but it will also be shown in the respective languages shortly.

It's been running on the hour every hour on nearly all channels.

I understand you will provide the infomation as it comes.

However you have to understand it is hard to explain this situation, with little info, to an older couple of ethnic background who are irate that something they paid for, that was NOT provided to them by UBI, is being "asked for" by UBI just because they have made the business decision to improve their encryption.

They feel that UBI has no right to take something they purchased from somwehre else, even if they are being provided the new box in return. Their opinion is that if UBI want to provide a good, professional service, and want their customers to be happy, they should simply provide the box no questions asked.

They've got it stuck in their heads that UBI are planning to pull some shifty financially with these old boxes, (i.e. profit off these old boxes) in a similar manner that TARBS profitted off many friends of theirs.

As you can see it makes explaining things difficult.

RATLSNAKE

They most likely will ship them to Fiji for PBS to use.

I bet a lot of people want to keep the hacked box so they can view PBS off 701.

I don't think anyone sits there and inserts them into the channels most likely automated to go on once every hour

RATLSNAKE,

This is the most effective way. Between 2-5% of people have called to complain that it's interupting their viewing. The rest have called to say I'm happy to see this message and something is being done about piracy.

The message is their to advise anyone watching for free to call UBI and subscribe before 28 April to recieve the free upgrade.

Apr. 4, 2006

The race for frequencies is on
(FoNet)

BELGRADE -- Twelve television broadcasters, whose applications were complete and submitted within the set deadline, have met the legal requirements needed to qualify for the public frequency allocation competition for five national broadcast licences, whereas the applications of four media companies have been rejected, announced the Serbian Public Broadcast Agency, RRA, in its press release.

The applications submitted by TV Avala, TV B92, TV BK, TV Kosava, MTS, Pink, Pro TV, Sigma Television, TV 5, Fox TV, Happy TV and CME SR TV have been accepted, according to the press release posted at the Public Broadcast Council website.

Due to failure to meet the legal requirements, incomplete documentation or untimely submitted applications, TV Politika’s bid was rejected. The RTL’s application was also rejected over its “disputable” ownership structure” since more than 49 percent of the company capital is foreign. TV A was disqualified as it failed to pay the required fee as well as IBC which is a so-called socially-owned company.

Nine radio broadcasters whose applications for five national radio broadcast frequencies were accepted are as follows: Kis FM, Pro FM, B92, Indeks, S, Fokus, Roadstar, Sigma FM and TDI.

The applications submitted by another seven radio stations were rejected: YU Radio (100 percent state ownership), MIP Radio (failure to pay the application fee), Radio Politika (for a variety of reasons), Radio Novosti (on the grounds of incomplete documentation), Radio Fleka and Radio Grada (foreign ownership share over 49 percent) and BS FM (100 percent socially owned capital).

Panonija TV, Most TV and Super TV from Subotica have qualified for the public competition for regional broadcast licences covering the territory of Vojvodina, the northern Serbian province.

The following television stations will be competing for the Belgrade City broadcast licences: Art TV, Enter TV, Kosava, SOS kanal, Metropolis, Most, Palma, Televizija Plus and Studio B.

================================================

http://tvblog.blog.hr/

srijeda, 05.04.2006.

TV - nacionalni nivo (5 dozvola):

Avala — nova stanica koju žele da pokrenu neke vodeće domaće firme poput Hemofarma, Metalca, ITM grupe, ali i Ekonomskog instituta, a koju je najavio Danko Đunić, bivši potpredsednik Savezne vlade pod Miloševićem.

B92 — već ima nacionalno pokrivanje. 48% kapitala stanice drži neprofitni Media Development Loan Fund - MDLF iza koga stoji Džordž Soros.

Posle oktobarskog prevrata 2000. Marija je brže-bolje prodala stanicu, a sadašnji vlasnici poseduju nekoliko manjih stanica u Nemačkoj i Švajcarskoj (tv.Berlin, tv.München i U1TV Zürich).

Pink — imperija koju nije potrebno posebno predstavljati. Nacionalno pokrivanje.

Obe stanice pripadaju grupaciji CME.

Sigma Television — kanal iza kojeg stoji vodeća kiparska privatna TV kuća Sigma. Pretežno je gleda populacija starosti 18-45 godina.

TV5 — niški kanal koji pokriva dobar deo centralne Srbije, a uz RTS, jedini emituje digitalni zemaljski (DVB-T) signal, i to u Beogradu.

RTL — vodeća medijska grupacija u Evropi s 34 TV i 34 radio stanice.
