Magnitude 4.0 earthquake strikes near El Centro, Imperial County, California, USA4.0 quake 18 Aug 2:45 pm (GMT -7) An earthquake of magnitude 4.0 occurred only 12 minutes ago 30 miles northwest of El Centro, California, United States, the United States Geological Survey reported. The quake hit at a very shallow depth of 5.5 miles beneath the epicenter near El Centro, Imperial County, California, USA, early afternoon on Wednesday 18 August 2021 at 2:45 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.0 earthquake as well. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Salton City (pop. 3,800) located 16 miles from the epicenter. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Brawley (pop. 25,900) located 26 miles from the epicenter, Calipatria (pop. 7,400) 26 miles away, Imperial (pop. 17,100) 27 miles away, El Centro (pop. 44,000) 30 miles away, Santa Isabel (pop. 29,300) 38 miles away, Calexico (pop. 40,100) 38 miles away, Coachella (pop. 44,600) 44 miles away, and La Quinta (pop. 40,500) 46 miles away.
