Moderate magnitude 4.2 quake hits 30 km south of Koronadal City, Philippines late at night4.2 quake 28 Sep 11:08 pm (GMT +8) A magnitude 4.2 earthquake near Koronadal City, South Cotabato, Soccsksargen, Philippines, was reported 31 minutes ago by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), considered the main national agency that monitors seismic activity in this part of the world. The earthquake occurred at a very shallow depth of 2 km beneath the epicenter late at night on Tuesday, September 28th, 2021, at 11:08 pm local time. Magnitude and other quake parameters can still change in the coming hours as the agency continues to process seismic data. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.2 as well. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Sinolon (pop. 2,800) located 6 km from the epicenter, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Tupi (pop. 16,500) located 15 km from the epicenter, Lake Sebu (pop. 21,800) 18 km away, Surallah (pop. 31,100) 21 km away, Polomolok (pop. 64,000) 21 km away, Banga (pop. 58,900) 24 km away, Koronadal City (pop. 125,500) 30 km away, and General Santos City (pop. 679,600) 36 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Maluñgun (pop. 52,200) located 46 km from the epicenter, and Alabel (pop. 43,300) 49 km away.
