Just 7 minutes ago, a 3.0-magnitude earthquake struck near Naalehu, Hawaii County, Hawaii, USA. The tremor was recorded early morning on Wednesday, December 15th, 2021, at 4:55 am local time, at a very shallow depth of 5.7 miles below the surface.
The event was filed by the United States Geological Survey, the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.0 earthquake as well.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Naalehu (pop. 870, 28 miles away), Pāhala (pop. 1,400, 30 miles away), Hawaiian Ocean View (pop. 4,400, 38 miles away), and Volcano Village (pop. 2,600, 41 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
