Moderate earthquake of magnitude 4.6 just reported 72 km northwest of Pembroke, New Zealand4.6 quake 14 Feb 3:31 am (GMT +13) Just 11 minutes ago, a 4.6-magnitude earthquake struck near Pembroke, Queenstown-Lakes District, Otago, New Zealand. The tremor was recorded early morning on Monday, February 14th, 2022, at 3:31 am local time, at a very shallow depth of 5.5 km below the surface. The event was filed by New Zealand's Earthquake Commission and Geological Survey (GeoNet), the first seismological agency to report it. A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.5 earthquake. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Haast (pop. 280) located 34 km from the epicenter, and Pembroke (pop. 4,400) 72 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Arrowtown (pop. 2,200) located 92 km from the epicenter, and Queenstown (pop. 10,400) 102 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
