Moderate magnitude 4.8 quake hits 58 km southwest of Pelabuhanratu, Indonesia late at night4.8 quake 28 Feb 10:38 pm (GMT +7) An earthquake of magnitude 4.8 occurred only 13 minutes ago 58 km southwest of Pelabuhanratu, Indonesia, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported. The quake hit at a shallow depth of 20 km beneath the epicenter near Pelabuhanratu, West Java, Indonesia, late at night on Monday, February 28th, 2022, at 10:38 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Pelabuhanratu (pop. 43,000) located 58 km from the epicenter, and Cicurug (pop. 89,000) 92 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Sukabumi (pop. 276,400) located 98 km from the epicenter, Caringin (pop. 91,800) 100 km away, Rangkasbitung (pop. 126,900) 100 km away, Ciampea (pop. 207,200) 102 km away, and Bogor (pop. 800,000) 105 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available.
