Moderate 4.7 quake hits near Sevastopol, Sebastopol City, Ukraine4.7 quake 22 Jun 5:42 am (GMT +3) The United States Geological Survey reported a magnitude 4.7 quake in the Ukraine near Sevastopol, Sebastopol City, only 27 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early morning on Thursday, June 22nd, 2023, at 5:42 am local time at a very shallow depth of 9.7 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. A second report was later issued by The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS), which listed it as a magnitude 4.7 earthquake as well. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) at magnitude 4.4, France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS) at magnitude 5.0, the Kandilli Oservatory and Earthquake Research Institute in Istanbul (KOERI-RETMC) at magnitude 4.5, Romania's National Institute for Earth Physics (NIEP) at magnitude 5.0, and the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 4.7. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Karan' (pop. 170) located 53 km from the epicenter, Balaclava (pop. 18,600) 55 km away, Sevastopol (pop. 416,300) 64 km away, Inkerman (pop. 10,200) 66 km away, Alupka (pop. 7,800) 66 km away, Koreiz (pop. 5,500) 70 km away, Gaspra (pop. 10,300) 71 km away, and Yalta (pop. 77,000) 79 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Bakhchysarai (pop. 27,400) located 87 km from the epicenter. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
