Significant magnitude 5.3 quake hits 21 km east of San Fernando de Monte Cristi, Dominican Republic around noon 5.3 quake 10 Nov 1:22 pm (GMT -4) Dominican Republic was shaken near San Fernando de Monte Cristi, Monte Cristi, Provincia de Monte Cristi, by an earthquake of magnitude 5.3 only 14 minutes ago, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter near San Fernando de Monte Cristi, Monte Cristi, Provincia de Monte Cristi, Dominican Republic, around noon on Friday, November 10th, 2023, at 1:22 pm local time. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been widely felt by almost everyone in the area of the epicenter. It might have caused light to moderate damage.
Moderate shaking probably occurred in Villa Vasquez (pop. 11,600) located 9 km from the epicenter, and Castañuelas (pop. 4,200) 13 km away.
In Las Matas de Santa Cruz (pop. 10,200) located 18 km from the epicenter, San Fernando de Monte Cristi (pop. 17,000) 21 km away, and Esperanza (pop. 42,200) 55 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Villa Bisono (pop. 33,100) located 67 km from the epicenter, and Santiago de los Caballeros (pop. 1,200,000) 89 km away.
