An earthquake of magnitude 5.3 occurred only 12 minutes ago 94 km southeast of Kirensk, Russia, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) reported.
The quake hit at a moderately shallow depth of 35 km beneath the epicenter near Kirensk, Irkutsk Oblast, Russia, around noon on Wednesday, December 27th, 2023, at 1:09 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), which listed it as a magnitude 5.4 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Kirensk (pop. 13,300) located 94 km from the epicenter, Alekseyevskaya (pop. 3,100) 95 km away, Markovo (pop. 6,300) 110 km away, and Magistral'nyy (pop. 7,600) 128 km away.
