Kennedy Space Center<br />Kennedy Space Center, Florida 32899<br />AC 321 867-2468<br />____________________________________________________________________________<br />_____________________________ <br /><br /><br />For Release: July 22, 2003<br /><br /><br />Tracy Young<br />Kennedy Space Center, Fla.<br />321/867-2468<br /><br /><br />KSC Release No: 63-03<br /><br /><br />"SHARP" STUDENTS PRESENT SUMMER RESEARCH PROJECTS JULY 25<br /><br /><br /> Local area high school students participating in NASA's Summer High<br />School Apprenticeship Research Program (SHARP) will present their summer<br />projects on July 25 at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex from 9 - 11<br />a.m.<br /><br /><br />NASA SHARP is an Agency-wide program in which selected area students are<br />paired with KSC scientists, engineers, and technology specialists to work on<br />research-based projects. SHARP was specifically designed to attract and<br />increase underrepresented students' participation and success rates in<br />science, mathematics and technology.<br /><br /><br />To be eligible for SHARP, students must have an overall 3.0 grade-point<br />average; demonstrate a strong interest in and aptitude for a career in<br />mathematics, engineering, or the sciences; be a permanent Florida resident;<br />attend school within a 50-mile radius of KSC; and be available on a<br />full-time basis for the entire duration of the program. Twenty exceptional<br />students from the five surrounding counties of KSC were selected from a pool<br />of more than 100 applicants to participate in the eight-week program. <br /><br /><br />Participants from Brevard County include Hailey Loomis, Cocoa Beach<br />Junior/Senior High School; Luis Quiles and Heather Sarkees, Eau Gallie High<br />School; Cristina Lopez Del Castillo, Melbourne Central Catholic High School;<br />Katherine Perakis, Merritt Island High School; Natasha Gray and Ashley<br />Player, Rockledge High School; Andrea Smith, Satellite High School; Michael<br />Davis, Kevin Smith, and Robbie Stokes, Titusville High School; Jacqueline<br />Henkel and Robin Shaw, West Shore Junior/Senior High School. Orange County<br />participants include Caesar Feliz, Maynard Evans High School; Antonio<br />Cabrera, Timber Creek High School; Patrick Barnett and Miguel Morales,<br />University High School.
