Magnitude 4.9 earthquake strikes near Doda, Jammu and Kashmir, IndiaA shallow magnitude 4.9 earthquake was reported early evening near Doda, Jammu and Kashmir, India. According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the quake hit on Monday 11 January 2021 at 7:02 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Doda (pop. 17,700) located 16 km from the epicenter, Kishtwār (pop. 20,600) 18 km away, and Rāmban (pop. 7,300) 32 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Bhadarwāh (pop. 13,400) located 37 km from the epicenter, Banihal (pop. 3,300) 39 km away, Udhampur (pop. 80,400) 58 km away, Anantnag (pop. 79,800) 63 km away, Bijbehara (pop. 24,600) 71 km away, and janmu (pop. 465,600) 91 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Srinagar (pop. 975,900) located 114 km from the epicenter.
