Just 11 minutes ago, a 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck near Nichinan, Nichinan Shi, Miyazaki, Japan. The tremor was recorded in the afternoon on Wednesday, October 6th, 2021, at 5:12 pm local time, at a shallow depth of 10 km below the surface.
The event was filed by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by France's Réseau National de Surveillance Sismique (RéNaSS), which listed it as a magnitude 5.5 earthquake. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.5, and Japan's National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED) at magnitude 5.8.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc.
In Kushima (pop. 22,100) located 32 km from the epicenter, Shibushi (pop. 18,300) 39 km away, Nichinan (pop. 44,200) 41 km away, and Kanoya (pop. 82,300) 54 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Miyakonojō (pop. 131,000) located 64 km from the epicenter, Ibusuki (pop. 29,700) 70 km away, Kokubu-matsuki (pop. 57,900) 81 km away, and Kagoshima (pop. 555,400) 88 km away.
