Moderate magnitude 4.6 earthquake 2 km northwest of Shahr Sultan, Pakistan4.6 quake 27 Dec 3:15 pm (GMT +5) India's National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported a magnitude 4.6 quake in Pakistan near Shahr Sultan, Muzaffargarh, Punjab, only 12 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early afternoon on Monday, December 27th, 2021, at 3:15 pm local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows, etc. In Shahr Sultan (pop. 16,200) located 2 km from the epicenter, and Jatoi Shimali (pop. 47,100) 18 km away, the quake should have been felt as light shaking. Weak shaking might have been felt in Alipur (pop. 33,600) located 25 km from the epicenter, Jampur (pop. 63,800) 41 km away, Shujaabad (pop. 66,000) 42 km away, Ahmadpur East (pop. 116,600) 55 km away, and Muzaffargarh (pop. 165,200) 56 km away. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Multan (pop. 1,437,200) located 81 km from the epicenter. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
