Magnitude 5.0 earthquake strikes near General Santos City, South Cotabato, Soccsksargen, Philippines5.0 quake 6 Jun 6:12 am (GMT +8) An earthquake of magnitude 5.0 occurred early morning on Monday, June 6th, 2022, at 6:12 am local time near General Santos City, South Cotabato, Soccsksargen, Philippines, as reported by the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ). According to preliminary data, the quake was located at an intermediate depth of 116 km. The strength of the earthquake may have been tempered by its relative great depth below the surface, which makes it feel weaker in absolute terms. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.4. Other agencies reporting the same quake include the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake at magnitude 5.0, and the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) at magnitude 5.0. Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter. Weak shaking might have been felt in Mangili (pop. 3,000) located 27 km from the epicenter. Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Malita (pop. 41,100) located 58 km from the epicenter, Malapatan (pop. 19,400) 71 km away, Alabel (pop. 43,300) 72 km away, Maluñgun (pop. 52,200) 78 km away, Santa Maria (pop. 16,800) 80 km away, Glan (pop. 24,300) 83 km away, General Santos City (pop. 679,600) 85 km away, Polomolok (pop. 64,000) 99 km away, and Digos (pop. 116,100) 105 km away. VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. If you’re in the area, please send us your experience through our reporting mechanism, either online or via our mobile app. This will help us provide more first-hand updates to anyone around the globe who wants to know more about this quake.
