An earthquake of magnitude 3.0 occurred in the morning on Sunday, June 5th, 2022, at 11:35 am local time near East Newdegate, Lake Grace, Western Australia, Australia, as reported by Geoscience Australia (GeoAu).
According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a very shallow depth of 3.1 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 3.0 earthquake as well.
Towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include East Newdegate (pop. 12) located 10 miles from the epicenter, and South Newdegate (pop. 26) 15 miles away. In Newdegate (pop. 160, 18 miles away), Lake Camm (pop. 36, 26 miles away), Lake King (pop. 88, 26 miles away), and Mount Madden (pop. 31, 29 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
