Magnitude 3.4 earthquake strikes near Astypalaia, Dodecanese, South Aegean, Greece

An intermediate magnitude 3.4 earthquake was reported early morning near Astypalaia, Dodecanese, South Aegean, Greece.
According to the National Observatory of Athens (NOA), the quake hit on Thursday, January 4th, 2024, at 3:18 am local time at an intermediate depth of 93.1 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the Kandilli Oservatory and Earthquake Research Institute in Istanbul (KOERI-RETMC) which listed the quake at magnitude 2.5. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 3.2.
According to preliminary calculations, we do not expect that the quake was felt by many people and did not cause any damage. In Astypalaia (pop. 1,100, 49 km away), Emporeio (pop. 1,900, 55 km away), Messaria (pop. 1,200, 57 km away), Fira (pop. 2,400, 59 km away), and Oia (pop. 3,400, 65 km away), the quake was probably not felt.
