Small tremor of magnitude 3.4 just reported 36 miles west of Ridgecrest, California, United States

The United States Geological Survey reported a magnitude 3.4 quake in the United States near Ridgecrest, Kern County, California, only 5 minutes ago. The earthquake hit in the morning on Wednesday, March 20th, 2024, at 8:09 am local time at a very shallow depth of 4.2 miles. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 3.4 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Weldon (pop. 2,600) located 2 miles from the epicenter.
Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Wofford Heights (pop. 2,200) located 9 miles from the epicenter, Lake Isabella (pop. 3,500) 9 miles away, Bodfish (pop. 2,000) 11 miles away, and Alta Sierra (pop. 7,000) 14 miles away. In Ridgecrest (pop. 28,800, 36 miles away), Oildale (pop. 32,700, 42 miles away), Bakersfield (pop. 373,600, 44 miles away), and Porturvil (pop. 56,100, 49 miles away), the quake was probably not felt.
