Significant magnitude 5.0 quake hits 93 km southeast of Kuril'sk, Russia early morning
5.0 quake 19 Mar 3:46 am (GMT +10)

The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported a magnitude 5.0 quake in Russia near Kuril'sk, Sakhalin Oblast, only 29 minutes ago. The earthquake hit early morning on Tuesday, March 19th, 2024, at 3:46 am local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 4.7 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Kuril'sk (pop. 1,700) located 93 km from the epicenter.
