Burt Rutan's SpaceShipOne paved the way to manned commercial space flight in June by flying to an altitude of 328,491 feet above Earth. The successful accomplishment of two suborbital flights in less than two weeks has ushered in the reality of commercial space travel in the near future. Over 700 women have responded in the 10 weeks since then, demonstrating strong interest in the study among potential participants. The cryogenic liquid oxygen pump is driven by a motor unit that has been operating to requirements for over a year. Previously, the pump had been pumping liquid nitrogen. Both motor and pump are piston machines, rather than the more traditional turbo-centrifugal hardware. The pump's size is matched to XCOR's 1,830 lbf thrust LOX-kerosene engine under development with private investment funds. Over 99 percent of the votes cast on the matter, representing nearly 85 percent of Intelsat’s total issued and outstanding ordinary shares, voted in favour of the transaction.
